ROME’s Fiumicino airport reopened its main international terminal on Friday after a fire damaged the airport’s Terminal 3 and forced airlines to cancel dozens of flights.
EgyptAir and Turkish Airlines flights between Rome and Asmara, Eritrea via Cairo and Istanbul were shortly affected on Wednesday and Thursday as Italy’s busiest airport was shut down after the blaze started.
All EgyptAir and Turkish Airlines flights are reinstated after airport operator Aeroporti di Roma (AdR) announced that eighty percent of check-in desks, mostly serving international flights, were working normally.
Among the reinstated departures were 550 International and 210 domestic flights.
The fire, believed to have been started by a short circuit in an electrical cabin that was under maintenance in an area of shops, sent thick clouds of smoke billowing out of the building until mid-morning on Thursday, according to Reuters.
EgyptAir and Turkish Airlines flights operate out of Terminal 3 connecting via their respective hub to Asmara, Eritrea.
EgyptAir offers campaign rates starting from as low as 460 Euros as advertised on its website.
