Over 50 international mining companies convened for the 5th annual Mining Conference in Asmara, Eritrea

THE 5th Eritrean Mining Conference opened today at Asmara Palace Hotel here in the capital under the theme “Mining Excellence for Driving Economic Growth”.

Speaking at the opening of the Conference in which Government officials, representatives of various countries, mining companies and social service-rendering institutions took part, Gen. Sebhat Ephrem, Minister of Energy and Mines, pointed out that Eritrea possesses rich mineral resources and that the undertaking of research activities towards harnessing the available resources is imperative. 

The Minister further indicated that sufficient information has been secured since the holding of mining conferences in Asmara in 2010 pertaining to industrial mining, and that endeavors are being made to harness such resource. In this regard, he stated that the necessary regulations have been put in place that has secured confidence on the part of foreign companies.

He went on to explain that about 60% of Eritrean territory contains mineral resources, and that the necessary conducive ground prevails in the country, coupled with a corruption-free leadership and viable infrastructure facilities, among others, thus ensuring the requisite factors for expanding industrial plants.

Gen. Sebhat also indicated that there are plans to launch 4-world class mining projects by 2017.

Representatives of over 50 mining companies are taking part in the conference.

Study papers by experts have been presented at the 5th Eritrean Mining Conference here in the capital regarding the experience acquired by mining companies engaged in mining activities in Eritrea, as well as their work accomplishments and exchange experience thereof.

It was pointed out that the mining companies operating in Eritrea presented concise and current information pertaining to the equipments they have deployed, work accomplishment and their efforts to safeguard sound ecology, among others.

The mining companies operating in Eritrea include Bisha, Zara, Sunridge, South Boulder, Beijing Sinoma, Andiamo Exploration, Ketina, Kerkebet, Land Energy Group, Adobha resources, etc. According to reports the remaining ones are in the stage of conducting research and studies.

Meanwhile, a pictorial exhibition portraying the activities of the mining companies operating in Eritrea, as well as the firms supplying machineries and equipments has been staged at the conference site.

The 5th Eritrean Mining Conference held at Asmara Palace Hotel here in the capital concluded yesterday.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr. Mebrahtu Ogbazghi, Director of mineral resources management in the Ministry of Energy and Mines, underlined the significance of the conference in exchanging experience among the countries and companies that undertake mining activities in Eritrea, in addition to witnessing the prevailing conducive ground in the country thereof. The conference also afforded the participants the opportunity of personally observing the existing resources and investment opportunities in Eritrea, he added.

Mr. Alasadair Smith, who involved himself in mining activities here, stated that Eritrea occupies a special status in the “Arabian-Nubian Shield” zone as regards mining activities.

The participants of the two-day conference are presently conducting a tour of various sites in the country where studies and exploration of mining are undertaking.
