The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) is an important tool for advancing children’s rights. While building on the same basic principles as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the AU Children’s Charter highlights issues of special importance in the African context.

By EriNews,

THE Government of Eritrea submitted a consolidated report on the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC), covering the period from 2002-2013.

The 254-page Report submitted to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) describes in detail the measures undertaken by Eritrea to safe-guard and promote the rights recognized in the ACRWC and the achievements and challenges encountered in the implementation of the Charter.

The achievements include the expansion of access to education and the resulting many-fold increase in school enrollment of children; the significant improvements in child health and the drastic reduction in the incidence of diseases leading to a major decline in infant and child mortality, surpassing the targets set in the MDGs.
