Eritrea sending an 11 member strong cycling team to the UCI World Road Cycling Championships in Yorkshire, UK

BY EMBASSY MEDIA | PRESS RELEASE

Cycling has become a vital element in Eritrea’s national identity. The UCI World Road Cycling Championships are coming to Yorkshire on September the 21st, 2019.

Yorkshire is the largest county in Britain covering 15,000 square kilometers. It enjoys an exceptional variety of landscapes – breathtaking coastline, glorious countryside and iconic rivers dotted with ancient towns, thriving cities, rugged moors, beautiful dales and magnificent hills.

Cycling is the biggest sport in Eritrea, and its cyclists are the best in Africa – and increasingly among the best in the world. It’s an odd by product of Eritrea’s unique history, geography and culture.

Since the 2015 breakthrough at the Tour de France, a growing number of Eritreans have been recruited to cycling teams in Europe, Asia and elsewhere.

Eritrea is the first African-registered team to compete at the Tour de France and other World Tours, and now aiming to produce the first ever African world champion in cycling.

Eritrea have 11 riders on the team this year at the UCI World Championship.

We call all Eritreans to come and support our National Team during the World Champion in Yorkshire.
