Eritrea’s Mekseb Debesay of Team Bike Aid has been handed the African Cyclist of the Year award for 2014.

A PANEL chaired by five-times Tour de France champion Bernard Hinault, at the initiative of the organizers of Tropical Amissa Bongo in Gabon, voted today Eritrea’s Mekseb Debesay Africa’s Best Cyclist for 2014 .

According to event organizers, Mekseb won with 68 points ahead of two professionals, South African Louis Meintjes (MTN Qhubeka) 51 points and Eritrean Natnael Berhane (Europcar) 41 points.

Both Natnael Berhane and Louis Meintjes were themselves had won the first two editions of this award, which recognizes the most iconic African riders of the year.

Debesay, who rides for the German team Bike Aid in the third division, had already established himself in the late head of the Continental season classification of the UCI Africa Tour after winning the Tour of Algeria and two stages, recently at the Tour of Rwanda.

Mekseb was also the overall winner of the 14th edition of the Grand Prix International Chantal Biya 2014 in Cameroon.
