By TesfaNews,

IN AN apparent escalation of the ongoing protest by ethnic Oromo students in about a dozen Oromia towns, an explosion went off at Haromaya University late Wednesday night killing one and injured more than 70 students.

According to eyewitness reports, the explosion occurred when a hand grenade was thrown at students watching a football match.

No one took responsibility for the explosion. The government, however, through the state-owned media blamed the ongoing crisis on “few extremists who seek to gain power through turmoil and upheaval.”

The widespread Oromo protests broke out yesterday at the town of Ambo against the unpopular “Addis Ababa (Finfinnee) Integrated Development Master Plan” resulted in the death of more than 10 people while three others were also shot dead at Madawalabu University.

Oromo students and the wider Oromo elites claim the Master Plan is aimed at displacing farmers in the outskirts and suburban areas of the city to meet the growing demand for land besides designed to weaken the Oromo identity. However, officials in Oromia state and the Addis Ababa city administration insist that the plan is only to develop Addis Ababa and its surrounding.

In the statement released today by the opposition Oromo Federalist Council (OFC), “Eleven were killed from Ambo while six were gunned down in nearby Guder town.”

The statement also adds “Ambo Hospital was flooded with the dead and injured, signifying the death toll could be higher than original figures.”

Today’s reports indicate at least 47 were killed, and no one has disputed the figure so far.

The OFC accused the minority ethnic Tigray led EPRDF regime of attempting to spark conflict between ethnic Oromos and Amharas.

Critics have over the years accused the ruling party of using “ethnic tension” as a method to instill fear in the society and get a credit for itself as a “savior” in the run-up to the coming elections.
