The UCI World Road Championships is currently underway in Richmond, Virginia, USA and will continue until September 27. The Eritrean National Cycling Team filed five professional riders to compete both in the elite and under 23 men road race events.

Mekseb Debesay (Bike-Aid) will be the only Eritrean rider to compete in the elite time trial and road race events while the other four, namely Merhawi Kudus (MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung), Metkel Eyob (MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung feeder), Yonas Tekeste (Eri-Tel) and Amanuel Gebregzibhier (CT-2020) will compete in the U23 men catagory for time trial and Road Race events.

In today’s 30km Individual Time Trial (ITT) event, Eritrean Merhawi Kudus finishes in 21st place.

Merhawi Kudus and the other three Eritrean riders from the U23 category are going to compete in the 162km Road Race (RR) on Friday 25th.

Mekseb Debesay is expected to compete the 53km elite men Time Trial on Wednesday 23rd September and the 259km elite RR on Sunday 27th September.

For the Eritrean fans in the Diaspora, Richmond 2015 cycling event brought one of a historical moment as it was the first time that an Eritrean National Team of any kind has been in the United States.

Eritreans in the Richmond and surrounding states are expected to come out in great numbers, as they famously do at the Tour de France and most recently at the Tour of Britain, to shower their support to the team.

Those fans who can not make it to Richmond can watch the race live from Richmond2015.com/LIVE.

Merhawi Kudus – Rider

I am really happy and excited to be racing world champs for my country Eritrea. We have always received a lot of support from our fans while racing during the year. Now we get to race for our country which makes me motivated and also very proud.
