German Development Minister Gerd Müller (CSU) has started his three-day official visits to Egypt and Eritrea.
According to a German public broadcasting radio station, Deutschlandfunk, Mr. Müller will first travel to Egypt and will held talks with President Al-Sisi, among other things, about the refugee crisis in Europe and Egypt’s role in curtailing the flow of illegal African migrants to Europe.
The development minister is expected to arrive Eritrea today in the morning hours.
Minister Gerd Müller’s agenda in Eritrea will include discussions on the issue of Eritrean refugees and human rights, according to Deutschlandfunk.
Last week the European Union unanimously approved a €200 million development aid to Eritrea that are aimed at promoting activities that create job opportunities and human rights, the two most reasons refugees used to claim asylum in Europe.
At a congress of her ruling CDU party, German Chancellor Angela Merkel today promised to “drastically decrease” the number of refugees entering Germany.
