The Egyptian cargo vessel, MV SUEZ, that was hijacked by the Somali Pirates on 02 August 2010 laden with a cargo of Cement bags destined to Eritrea from Pakistan, was confirmed sank in international waters on Monday after being attacked again by the pirates soon after they receive a ransom totaling of $2.1 million.
Crew members of the Suez have reported another attack has been launched on Wednesday morning with the pirates firing rockets at the freshly freed freighter while sailing in the dangerous Somali waters en route to a port in Oman. Despite the lack of response to the Suez during attack, the PNS Babura, Pakistani Navy vessel, was in the vicinity to the Suez and is expected to reach the freighter to escort it to the port Salalah in Oman.
An official from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs told a state-owned Oman Media Company that they can confirm the Suez sank in 4,900 meters of water, posing no threat to shipping or navigation in the area. They also reported that the ship was totally depleted of fuel prior to its demise, leaving no risk of oil spill or pollution that could harm the environment.
The MV SUEZ, deadweight 17,300 Tones with a crew of 22 (11 Egyptians, 4 Pakistanis, 1 Sir Lankan and 6 Indian nationalities) is a Panama flagged merchant vessel. The crews, including Captain Wasi Hassan, were able to counter the attacks without any report of causalities and safely transferred to a Pakistani navy vessel prior to the ship submerging.
