THE organisers of this year’s African Cyclist of the Year award have identified the five finalists that includes two Eritrean riders.

The jury that was chaired by Bernard Hinault, the five times winner of the Tour de France, have revealed their names today.

Accordingly, Natnael Berhane and Mekseb Debesay becomes the two Eritrean cyclists that reached to the final stage of the selection.

The remaining three names are Mouhssinne Lahsaini (MAR), Louis Meintjes (RSA) and Valens Ndayisenga (RWA).

These five finalists have been selected out of the 15 nominated African riders out of which four were Eritreans, namely – Natnael Berhane, Mekseb Debesay, Ferekalsi Debesay, and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier.

It was recalled that Natnael Berhane was voted winner of the 2012 African Cyclist of the Year trophy while Louis Meintjes of South Africa for the 2013.

The new winner will be announced next week.

Natnael Berhane (ERI) and Louis Meintjes (RSA) are the two favorite contenders for this year selection though the shining super star Mekseb Debesay (ERI) have the potential to surprise these two giants.
