The 26 Kilometers modern continental highway road that links Sudan to the neighboring Eritrea will be inaugurated next week on October 26th, 2011 in the presence of President of the Republic Field Marshal Omer Albashir, President of Eritrea Isaias Afewerki and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamed Bin Kelifa Al-Thani during their special visit to Kassala State.
The Kassala – Al Laffa road has been fully financed to the tune of 50 million dollars by the state of Qatar. It is regarded as an important and strategic road and aims to reactivate the trade and economic activities between the two countries. The two countries have already abolished visa requirements for all people and goods movement between the two countries.
During President Isaias’ recent visit to Khartoum, President Al-Bashir lauded the distinguished relations between Sudan and Eritrea. President Al-Bashir disclosed that there is a plan to establish additional road and railway link between the two countries in the immediate future.
Sudanese Minister of Urban Planning Mr. Abdul-Mo’ez praised Qatar’s role in strengthening the Sudanese-Eritrean relations by fully funding the missing 26 Kilometers link between the two countries that eventually extends up to the Eritrean port city of Massawa.
It has to be recalled that on September of last year, the Presidential Advisor Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail, accompanied by the State Minister at the Ministry of Labour, Dr. Amina Dirar, has made an inspection tour to the progress of the project and has commended the distinguished relations between Sudan and Eritrea, referring to the great role it has played for the signing of East Sudan Peace Agreement, saying that the coming days will witness more consolidation to the political and economic relations between the two countries.
