It’s been a year since my appointment as South Africa’s ambassador to Eritrea, which seems an appropriate point to reflect on my experience and the tentative conclusions I have reached concerning the country’s potential.

Firstly, as an untapped frontier, with the right investment and development partners, Eritrea will be a changed country within the next three decades.

South African Diplomat Dismisses Aljazeera Ban Report

South African ambassador to Eritrea, Ambassador Iqbal Jhazbhay, yesterday dismissed reports of Al-Jazeera satellite television ban in Eritrea as a “pure lie“.

On a short message he posted on his Facebook page, the Ambassador simply described the recent report from the Reporters Without Borders (RWB) as “a deliberate campaign of defamation” on Eritrea.

In its subsequent anti-Eritrea report, the Paris-based RWB this week released its toxic tipped report under the title ”Eritrea slammed over Al Jazeera ban” without even labor to check the veracity of its source behind it.  Continue reading South African Diplomat Dismisses Aljazeera Ban Report

The Impact of Eritrea-South Africa Bilateral Relation in the Horn of Africa

For Eritrea, building a strategic relationship with any country is a top foreign policy priority

Eritrea and South Africa formally established diplomatic relations in 1994. Eighteen years later, the two states seem to be strengthening their bilateral relations.

In March, Iqbal Jhazbhay, the new South African ambassador to Eritrea, presented his credentials to President Isaias Afwerki. Significantly, Jhazbhay was warmly received by the president only a week after his arrival, which is a very unusual occurrence.
