Sophia Tesfamariam, the new Permanent Representative of Eritrea to the United Nations
Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam presented her credentials to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Sophia Tesfamariam Yohannes, the new Permanent Representative of Eritrea to the United Nations, presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Before her latest appointment, Ms. Tesfamariam was Executive Director of the United States Foundation for the Horn of Africa in Washington, D.C., beginning in 2005. Between 1998 and 2005, she worked in the administration division of the Boeing Company in Leesburg, Virginia, United States. She was a credentialing specialist for PHP Healthcare in Reston, Virginia, from 1989 until 1998.



Ms. Tesfamariam was co-editor of Diaspora, a monthly digital and print magazine providing news and analysis tailored to the global African diaspora communities with a focus on women and youth in development.

She has considerable global experience in social development, having conducted more than 100 seminars and workshops for women and young people in the United States, Europe and Africa.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Western International University in Phoenix, Arizona, in the United States.

Born in Asmara, Eritrea, on 25 May 1960, Ms. Tesfamariam is married and has three children.

Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam, Permanent Representative of the State of Eritrea to the UN with rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, presented her credentials to the UN Secretary General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, yesterday.

At the occasion, Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam and Mr. Antonio Guterres discussed ways and means of strengthening ties between Eritrea and the United Nations.

The UN Secretary General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, commended Eritrea’s vital role in the enhancement of regional peace and stability, and, expressed his best wishes for further progress in the years ahead.

Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam also delivered message of goodwill from President Isaias Afwerki to the UN Secretary General.

UN Chief Welcomes Horn of Africa Rapprochement

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday welcomed the visit by foreign ministers of Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia to Djibouti.

Guterres said the agreement reached among the four ministers to work together to restore peace and stability in the region is a positive example for the region and beyond.

A Blurred Message that Blends Humanitarianism with Politics

Be fair, informed, impartial and non-judgmental. UN Chief Antenio Guterres recently requests the international community to ensure ‘total solidarity’ with Ethiopia as a matter of generosity. We ask, why is Ethiopia still in the grips of Biblical famine and endless “new droughts”?

Concerning the world governments and humanitarian agencies response to drought in Ethiopia; UN Secretary General Antenio Guterres and UN aid chief Stephen O’Brien in January 29 of 2017 whispered that the international community must ensure total solidarity with Ethiopia government as not only a matter of generosity but also of justice and self interest.

This was stated at 28th summit of AU in Addis Abeba. The UN Secretary General also describes Ethiopia as country of the largest refugee hosting country in Africa, with its open border for any cross boundary transactions. Besides, the head officer also commends Ethiopia as the source of stability in the Horn of Africa and the world community must collaborate in maintaining Ethiopian security for not to be challenged by the surrounding multifaceted chaos sourced from Eritrea, Somalia and South Sudan.
