Absconded for Headlines, A Shattered Dream!

To Yonatan Habte “Shekortetino”: Laughter is the best medicine. But if you laugh with no reason, you need medicine.

By Helen B.,

As we remembered all in 2015, ten of the Eritrean national soccer team deserted after [deliberately] losing the game to team Botswana. Their desertion made short lived headlines indented to undermine the government and the people of Eritrea.

Hence the government and Interior Minister of Botswana valiantly denied them political asylum, convinced that the Eritrean stars were not fearful for their lives and they should return. These players like all other Eritrean national sport stars are exempted from any military services. Botswana government officials saw no legitimate ground to grant them political asylum but allowed them to temporarily stay in the country after appeal was made by the so-called human right group. Botswana Asks UNHCR to Resettle Eritrean Soccer Players

UNHCR to give the disgraced Eritrean soccer players three options: voluntary repatriation to Eritrea; receiving alternative status, such as citizenship or permanent residence, or resettlement to a third country. I will bet my bottom dollar that it was for the latter that they shamelessly throw their country’s pride under the bus.

By Reuters,

Botswana wants 10 Eritrean soccer players it granted asylum to to be resettled in another country by the United Nations, as under Bostwana’s law they must stay in a refugee camp for 10 years.

A government official said the southern African nation was not withdrawing asylum for the players but giving them a chance to seek refuge in a country where the resettlement process was faster.

The players claimed asylum on Oct. 13 after playing the match against Botswana, becoming the latest in a series of defections by players from a country that the United Nations for human rights council accuse of violations. Continue reading Botswana Asks UNHCR to Resettle Eritrean Soccer Players

Eritrean Players Face Expulsion as Botswana Withdrew Asylum

The 24 players out of the 34 national team members that sent to Botswana for a return match have returned back while the 10 players who was urged by the EMDHR network to seek asylum in Botswana refused to board the plane. Look what happened to them. Botswana is not a banana republic.

By TesfaNews,

The government of Botswana has reversed its decision to grant asylum for the disgraced 10 Eritrean football players and asked to go back home or seek refuge elsewhere.

A letter wrote to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) by the Ministry of Defense, Justice and Security secretary, Segakweng Tsiane, indicates that the government believes the players have no grounds to seek “protection” in Botswana. Botswana Threatened to Deport Runaway Eritrean Soccer Players

Minister Shaw Kgathi. Never bother to forcefully return the runaway players. Those who value the pride of their people and nation have proudly returned to their country, already.

By Reuters,

Ten Eritrean soccer players seeking asylum in Botswana should be deported, Botswana’s security minister said on Thursday, a decision their lawyer said he would challenge in court.

The Eritreans refused to board their plane home on Wednesday, the latest in a series of defections by athletes from a country under investigation by the United Nations for human-rights violations.

“The issue is simple: they must go back to their country. You don’t come here to play football, lose, then say you want political asylum. There are proper steps that should be followed if you want to be a refugee,” Defense and Security Minister Shaw Kgathi told GabzFM, a local private radio station. Botswana Advances Against Eritrea, Henok Goitom Scores on a Brilliant Header

The newly re-organized and restructured Eritrean National Football team in their first leg match with Botswana in Asmara.

By Bereket Kidane,

The Red Sea Camels failed to advance to the next round of FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia Qualifying matches after losing 3-1 to the Zebras of Botswana in Francistown yesterday. Henok Goitom scored on a brilliant header off a cross pass he received from Yonas Solomon only nine minutes into the game. With the goal he scored in Francistown against Botswana, Henok Goitom becomes the latest football star to score a goal for two different countries in international matches. Henok had previously scored four goals in thirteen appearances for the Swedish U21 team. Continue reading Botswana Advances Against Eritrea, Henok Goitom Scores on a Brilliant Header
