Six SPLA Brigadier Generals Defects to Join Rebel Forces

Explosions and sustained heavy gunfire were heard in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state capital of Wau on Saturday (26) after senior government military officers and troops have defected and fled into the bush to join rebel forces led by Riek Machar.

However, several Nuer generals and troops have remained loyal to president Kiir and are in charge of military units in the South Sudanese army (SPLA), which is fighting against rebels.

SENIOR army officers who mutinied on Saturday in Western Bahr el Ghazal state capital Wau said their defection to opposition forces led by former vice-president, Riek Machar came after they were targeted based on their ethnicity in the aftermath of an alleged massacre in which 192 unarmed Nuer trainee soldiers were killed in Mapel, east of Wau town.

HUNDREDS of civilians, including women and children, were massacred in ethnic violence when rebels seized an oil-rich town in South Sudan, in the single worst atrocity since the conflict began.

Eritrea to Begin Evacuating Citizens from South Sudan

Eritreans control 60-70 percent of the Business in the Capital Juba

The Eritrean Embassy in South Sudan says it is giving priority to evacuating citizens from Benitu and Unity State amid reports of escalating violence and alarming discovery of mass graves.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that around 500 Eritreans taking refuge at a United Nation Peace Keeping compound in Bor along with thousands of displaced Sudanese.

The embassy also said it is closely following the situation in other areas of the country too and will do the same if deemed necessary.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, in a statement today said “we have discovered a mass grave in Bentiu, in Unity State, and there are reportedly at least two other mass graves in the capital Juba.” Continue reading Eritrea to Begin Evacuating Citizens from South Sudan
