UNPLUG. Despite his despotic style of government and lamentable record on human rights, President Omar Guelleh of Djibouti has been a vital ally of the United States. Now that he fell in love with China, the Pentagon is contemplating to unplug his dictatorship rule in the tiny Djibouti.

The increasingly erratic conduct of one of Africa’s more despotic rulers is raising serious concerns about the future of a vital American intelligence-gathering base that plays a central role in targeting al-Qaeda and Islamic State (ISIS) militants in countries such as Yemen and Syria.

Since coming to power 1999, President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa, has emerged as a vital ally of the United States, in spite of his despotic style of government and mounting criticism over his country’s lamentable record on human rights. China Deal Threatens Only American Military Base in Africa

US and Chinese bases side-by-side in the tiny Djibouti. The U.S. fear that will seriously compromise its own intelligence-gathering operations in the country. Pentagon is now calling Washington to relocate sensitive intelligence-gathering operations to more secure locations outside of Djibouti where they are better protected from interception by the Chinese. But where? to Eritrea?

Attempts by China to increase its strategic involvement in East Africa have raised serious concerns about the future of one of America’s key intelligence-gathering posts on Islamic State and al-Qaeda.
Since the September 11 attacks in 2001, the US military’s Camp Lemonnier, which is located in the East African state of Djibouti, has become the centre for US terrorism operations in the region, gathering vital intelligence on al-Qaeda and Islamic State terror cells operating both in Africa and the Gulf region. US AFRICOM Reborn in Djibouti

The push for the illegal UN resolution 1907 by the shameless USA was not after all about Eritrea’s refusal to withdraw from a ‘disputed territory’ or any territorial claims. That ‘territory’ now turns out to be a ‘mountain on the Eritrean side’ that comfortably overlooks the new AFRICOM base in Djibouti.

The visit to Djibouti by US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in late 2011 seems to be an omen foretelling the  rebirth of the US African Command’s (AFRICOM) base in the Horn of Africa.
