The United States on Wednesday has condemned acts of violence in one of its client state Djibouti and urges the government to immediately release all the opposition leaders who have been detained during the protest that turned deadly.

“The United States condemns recent acts of violence in the capital of Djibouti and calls for the immediate release of opposition leaders who have been detained. We express our condolences to all those affected by the tragic deaths and injuries caused by these attacks,” the US State Department said. Up to 19 Killed in Djibouti Violence

A Djibouti opposition group said at least 19 people were killed in clashes with police that began when people were marking a religious celebration

Opposition activists in Djibouti say as many as 19 people were killed Monday when security forces opened fire on a religious gathering in the capital.

Witnesses said the troops targeted a crowd in the Balbala neighborhood that was commemorating the late religious leader Sheikh Yonis Muse.

Security forces raided the venue at around 5 a.m. local time and began shooting, according to the sources.
