Israeli Firm to Supply €18.7 mn Solar-powered Irrigation System to Eritrea

The project is the first of its kind – integrated drip irrigation project with solar pumping in Africa – and will be relevant for many other countries where the farms are not connected to grid electricity.

NaanDanJain Irrigation Ltd., a producer and provider of tailor-made irrigation solutions company, said it entered into an agreement worth 18.7 million Euros with Ministry of Agriculture and National Development, Eritrea, for the supply and installation of solar-powered drip irrigation systems.

NaanDanJain irrigation Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Jain irrigation and is head quartered in Israel.

EU and Eritrea Signed €18.7m Drip Irrigation Systems Supply and Installation Deal

The European Union and the State of Eritrea have today committed to continue and strengthen cooperation on development projects. A further major milestone of the EU’s program in “Support to Agriculture/Food Security in Eritrea” has been met: on Thursday 08 September 2016, the Ministry of National Development and the Israeli contractor “Naan Dan Jain Irrigation LTD” signed a contract worth €18.7 million for the supply and installation of drip irrigation systems for 16 irrigation sites in two out of six regions in Eritrea. In 1994, Eritrea released the Macro Policy Paper (MPP), articulating a broad national development policy with a special focus on agriculture. Specific points raised in the document include: the need to create of a modern, technologically advanced and competitive agricultural sector; the importance of producing high value agricultural commodities through the development of irrigation and water collection systems; how to better utilize water for irrigated agriculture and new irrigation schemes; and the need to promote research and extension.
