Dutch Action Against Eritrea’s Charge d’Affaires is Unwarranted and Unacceptable

The designation of Eritrea’s Charge d’Affaires as persona non grata constitutes an arbitrary and provocative act that has no consonance with the Vienna Protocol on Diplomatic Relations

Eritrea is considering to take appropriate reciprocal measures against the Dutch government to partially redress the wrong.


On Tuesday last week, the Dutch Foreign Ministry expelled Eritrea’s Charge d’Affaires to the country, Mr. Tekeste Ghebremedhin, invoking untenable explanations for its unacceptable act.

Netherlands Expels Eritrea’s Chargé d’Affaires

The cabinet acknowledges that no judge has as yet recorded proof of wrongful or punishable offenses by the Eritrean embassy office in The Hague. The decision is political.

Put up or shut up. Eritrea challenged the Swiss government to prove “a single case” with veracious evidence if any of the Embassy staff members has ever intimidated, threatened or in any form harassed an Eritrean citizen to make him/her coercively pay the voluntary 2% tax. It couldn’t. The gov’t knows its deceptive allegations has no legal legs to stand.


The Dutch government has told the highest representative of Eritrea in the Netherlands to leave the country, minister of Foreign Affairs Halbe Zijlstra said on Wednesday.

Tekeste Ghebremedhin Zemuy has been declared persona non grata, Zijlstra wrote in a letter to parliament, as the government saw mounting evidence [not corroborated by the Dutch police] of Eritrea continuing to force tax payments from people who fled the country. New Eritrean Ambassador to the Netherlands Presents Credentials

THE Eritrean Ambassador to the European Union, Mr. Negasi Kassa, has presented his credentials to His Majesty King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands as Eritrea’s non-resident Ambassador to the country.

The Ambassador conveyed a message of goodwill from President Isaias Afwerki to King Willem-Alexander and the people of the Netherlands. He expressed the readiness of the Eritrean Government to further strengthen the existing ties with the Netherlands, the EU and other member countries of the union.
