Human Rights Watch said Friday that Ethiopian sources killed at least 140 people and wounded many more in what the group says “may be the biggest crisis to hit Ethiopia since the 2005 election violence.” The rights group’s new estimate is nearly twice the death toll it estimated last month.

The protesters say the government plan will lead to a loss of autonomy and marginalization for Oromo people living on the outskirts of the capital.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) also called for the release of an Oromo politician arrested last month.

The government has accused Oromo protesters of links with terror groups.

Ethiopian police killed 10 Oromo students who were demonstrating peacefully over plans to integrate the capital, Addis Ababa, with surrounding towns in Oromia region in the past three weeks, an opposition leader said.

Ethiopia: One Killed, 70 Injured in Haramaya University Explosion

A peaceful protest demanding for an immediate halt to the disingenous Integrated Addis Ababa Development Master Plan quickly shaping itself into an ethnic Oromo student movement

IN AN apparent escalation of the ongoing protest by ethnic Oromo students in about a dozen Oromia towns, an explosion went off at Haromaya University late Wednesday night killing one and injured more than 70 students.

According to eyewitness reports, the explosion occurred when a hand grenade was thrown at students watching a football match.

No one took responsibility for the explosion. The government, however, through the state-owned media blamed the ongoing crisis on “few extremists who seek to gain power through turmoil and upheaval.”  Continue reading Ethiopia: One Killed, 70 Injured in Haramaya University Explosion
