Ethiopia’s Oromos Celebrate Irreecha Festival

The celebration was held in capital Addis Ababa for the first time in 150 years.

The festival was usually held in Bishoftu, a town located in the Oromia region, about 40 km south of Addis Ababa. But this year, i.e. 150 years later, it was celebrated in at Hora Finfinne in the capital Addis Ababa.

An Oromo Irreecha festival transformed on Sunday into a rare moment of open defiance to the government one year after a stampede killed more than 600.

An Ethiopian religious festival transformed on Sunday into a rare moment of open defiance to the government one year after a stampede started by police killed dozens at the gathering.
