Yemen’s worsening conflict is contributing to a spike in piracy in the region, with Somali pirates taking advantage of a reduced international naval presence and more readily available weaponry to carry out attacks.
Filipino fishermen based in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia KSA have been warned against crossing into Eritrean waters, and becoming victims of piracy and detention.
The Blas F. Ople Policy Center, a non-profit organization that assists distressed migrant workers, issued the warning while welcoming home nine Filipino fishermen who were deported by the government of Eritrea after they were caught fishing illegally in their territorial seas, reported Manila Bulletin.
Four British citizens have been detained in Eritrea, the Foreign Office in London said Friday, amid reports that the men were former soldiers guarding a merchant ship from pirates.
