Daniel Teklehaimanot Secured the Polka Dot Jersey for the Second Year in a Row

Daniel Teklehaimanot wins 2nd Polka Dot Jersey
Eritrean rider Daniel Teklehaimanot secured the best climber of the race title at the 2016 Critèrium du Dauphiné to become the only rider to win 2 Dauphine polka dot jerseys in a row since 1996.

Stage 7 of the 2016 Critèrium du Dauphiné was another tough one. With six categorized climbs on the menu, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka wanted to be part of the action to help Daniel Teklehaimanot claim back the Polka Dots jersey as the best climber of the race. In the end our African Team was able to celebrate, as the Eritrean star secured the jersey for the second year in a row.

Edvald Boasson Hagen was also able to get onto the podium, taking the overall in the points classification. Dauphine #5: Daniel Teklehaimanot Wins the Polka Dot Jersey Again

“I like the polka dot jersey a lot. So I’m really happy again today. I won the King of the Mountains competition last year. Of course it’s my goal to win it again this year. Tomorrow it’s very hilly. I’ll try to keep the jersey but it won’t be easy. What I and my team achieved last year gave us a lot of motivation to perform again this year at the Dauphiné and the Tour de France.” – Daniel Teklehaimanot

The first real uphill finish of this year’s Criterium du Dauphine saw Chris Froome (Team Sky) take the victory ahead of GC rivals, Richie Porte (BMC) and Adam Yates (Orica-Greenedge). Eritrean Riders are the Jackie Robinson of the Grand Tour

The three Eritreans of ‘Many Firsts’- the first Eritreans on Tour de France, the first black African riders on the Tour de France, the first African to wear the red polka dotted jersey as the Tour’s best climber riding for the Tour’s first modern African team. These are the riders that hope to blaze a grueling trail for the continent Africa. These are ambassadors for African cycling.

WHEN Jackie Robinson became the first black Major League Baseball player for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, he was taunted and racially abused by white players who realized that their dominance of the sport was about to end. Today, only 60% of Major League Baseball players are white. The game’s top athletes are blacks from the Caribbean countries like the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba. MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung’s first objective of the day was to retain Daniel Teklehaimanot’s Polka Dot jersey. With 2 points available at the stage finish, our African team were relying largely on Joquim Rodriguez (Katusha) not winning the stage, as he was the only real threat to Daniel’s jersey today.
