There is nothing more revealing than witnessing the honour of the United Nations dragged into the mud for it conveniently allows itself to be seen as a tool for a club of big boys intent on bullying smaller countries through some ludicrous groups and individuals within the organisation.

The Somalia-Eritrea Monitoring Group (SEMG) was one of those discredited outfits of the United Nations designed for such purposes.

Last week, the group’s annual report to the Security Council’s sanctions committee on Eritrea and Somalia has got a fierce criticism from a number of Security Council members, notably Russia, for its “biased and groundless conclusions and recommendations.”  Continue reading Eritrea Breaching the “Resolution”?

Eritrea Responds to Leaked Monitoring Group Report

The dysfunction of the UN’s sanctions committees is exemplified by the current Eritrea report. There was no consensus on releasing it, as some argued there was no evidentiary support for its claims. But it was, predictably, leaked to Reuters which rather than put it online cherry picked its view.

But tellingly, the country at issue, Eritrea, tells Inner City Press it has not been provided with a copy of the report. That is dysfunction.
