In a statement, the group said the historic moment that had fulfilled the dreams of the South Sudanese people was the outcome of their determination and struggle.
“The people of Ogaden have followed closely the legitimate struggle of the people of South Sudan and welcome the birth of the South Sudan Republic as a positive event in Africa’s history. The struggle of the people of South Sudan was not easy. It required patience and sacrifice”, it said.
The Minister of Information and Government Spokesman for the Republic of South Sudan, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, has applauded the Eritrean business community in his country for the vast investment they have made and described it as exemplary in fostering the already existing excellent ties between the two people and governments.
Eritrea’s president Isaias Afwerki arrived in Juba, the capital city of the newly born nation of South Sudan, one day ahead, to participate in the official celebrations marking the declaration of the Republic of South Sudan due to take place on the 9th of July 2011.
It has been 56 years in the making, but it is finally here. The year 1955 marks the beginning of the struggle of the people of South Sudan for dignity and self-determination; July 9, 2011, the successful completion of that epic national effort.
The odds were never easy for the people of South Sudan. They had to overcome immense difficulties and pay a heavy price in a journey full of twists and turns, successes and near fatal setbacks. But they found within themselves the fortitude and the capability- political, military and diplomatic- to sustain their liberation movement until victory. United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon applauded Eritrea’s “contribution to peace and stability in Sudan.” The Secretary General said, Eritrea is an important regional actor and its role for peace in Sudan has been significant. He mentioned Eritrea’s facilitation of the East Sudan Peace Agreement and Eritrea’s role in the Darfur peace process.
