Dream day for Dimension Data as Eritrean Mekseb Debesay wins the queen stage

Mr. Bombastic Mekseb Debesay claimed Dimension Data’s first win of the 2017 Tour de Langkawi.

The 4th stage, and Queen stage of the Tour de Langkawi couldn’t have gone any better for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka as Mekseb Debesay won a top the Cameron Highlands. Cameron Bayley (IsoWhey Sports) was 2nd with our African Team’s race leader, Ryan Gibbons taking third on the stage and kept the overall race lead.

The 4th stage of the Tour de Langkawi was always touted as the Queen stage of this year’s race with the 30km climb up to the Cameron Highlands set to be the main decider for the overall classification. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka couldn’t have asked for a better day, controlling the peloton for the first 140km of the stage, Nic Dougall and Adrien Niyonshuti were incredible. After Merhawi Kudus had excelled in the most important Queen’s stage of the famous Genting mountains of the Tour de Langkawi last Sunday, he continues to keep up the heat on the General Classification (GC) leader from the 2nd place.

Two days after his Queen’s stage performance, Merhawi has shown grit, determination and hunger to win today after he had picked himself up following an unfortunate crash with only 7 km left of the 200km race course of stage-6 yesterday. The boy didn’t panic. He just got up, dusted himself down and was on his bike again to catch the fast moving peloton under immense pressure. Eritrean professional riders are fast becoming the back bone for Africa’s #1 Cycling team – MTN-Qhubeka

Team MTN-Qhubeka has recently signed some high profile new athletes, as well as re-signing many of its current riders, as it focuses on the goal of developing the first-ever UCI African Pro Continental Team in 2013, and ultimately competing at the Tour de France in the next few years.
