What’s in it for Djibouti? Money. Pure and simple. For the very autocratic regime that has done extraordinarily little for its people, this is a fantastic get-rich-quick scheme – to rent bits of desert to foreign powers.

China is constructing its first overseas military base just a few miles from one of the United States’ largest and most important foreign bases — Camp Lemonnier in the small East African nation of Djibouti.  Five other nations have put up bases there, and Saudi Arabia will soon join them.

UAE Can Fly Warplanes from New Berbera Base

Somaliland Foreign Minister Saad Ali Shire said, the U.A.E. armed forces can launch military attacks from the Berbera base with the preliminary agreement placing no limits on the operations they can carry out.

A top official said Friday that forces from the United Arab Emirates could soon be flying fighter jets from a new base in the breakaway republic of Somaliland.

Somalia Official: Somaliland – UAE Deal Corrupt and Illegal

Somalia’s Auditor General accused President Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo of Somaliland and Somalia’s former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of accepting bribes in exchange for illegally backing the controversial UAE military base deal with Somalialnd.

Officials in Somalia and breakaway Somaliland took bribes in exchange for authorizing a United Arab Emirates military base in the port city of Berbera, according to Somalia’s auditor general.

UAE Military Presence Expands in Africa

The United Arab Emirates has signed an agreement to establish a second foreign military base in the Horn of Africa.

The United Arab Emirates’ second air and naval base in the Horn of Africa will be established in the port city of Berbera, Somaliland.

The United Arab Emirates has signed an agreement to establish a second foreign military base in the Horn of Africa.

The new base, according to the source present at the negotiations, will be established at the coastal city of Berbera in Somaliland and will be an air and naval base. According to the government source the MoU was signed in the last week of September when a senior Somaliland delegation was in the UAE.

The self governing semi-autonomous Somaliland and the UAE enjoyed close political, economic and military ties since 2012. Continue reading UAE Military Presence Expands in Africa
