AMBASSADOR Estifanos Habtemariam, new Eritrean envoy to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, presented his credentials to Queen Elizabeth II.

The private reception was held today at the Buckingham Place in London.

Several other Ambassadors also presented their Letters of Credence to Queen Elizabeth II today.

On the occasion of Eritrea’s 22nd year of Independence, the Eritrean Embassy in London organized for Friends of Eritrea as part of the program “May in Honour of Independence Day in the UK” on 23rd May 2013, that encompassed a series of events during the month of May, was held at the Hilton Hotel in London.

The issue of the four ex-Royal Marine British nationals, who were arrested on late last December in Eritrea, has taken a new turn after the country’s president disclosed some shocking details of the incident.

Four British citizens have been detained in Eritrea, the Foreign Office in London said Friday, amid reports that the men were former soldiers guarding a merchant ship from pirates. 

A statement said Britain was “deeply concerned” that authorities in the Horn of Africa nation had not allowed consular officials to speak to or visit the men, adding that ministers and diplomats were continuing to demand access.  Continue reading Four Britons held in Eritrea
