Asmara – Krakow: Potential of Becoming Sister Cities?

Possibilities of establishing sister city relation between Asmara and Kraków, both World Heritage sites, in order to explore and promote cultural and commercial ties.

Yesterday, I went to the City Hall in Krakow, Poland, to interview Prof. Jacek M Majchrowski, Mayor of the Royal Capital City of Kraków since 2002 (re-elected in 2006, 2010 and in 2014), a lawyer, historian, and a professor at Jagiellonian University.

Eritrea’s Picturesque Capital is Now a World Heritage Site

Now that the entire Asmara city is a World Heritage site, how serious the Eritrean government can take significant steps to capitalize on this unique UNESCO status and encourage tourism is the next big question. It is to be recalled the Royal Institute of British Architects had on the night of December 6th, 2016 awarded the President’s Medal for Research. The 2016 RIBA President’s Medal for Research was then presented to Dr. Edward Denison, Eng. Medhanie Teklemariam and Eng. Asmara Art Deco Exhibition in CapeTown

Asmara owns more than 4000 remarkable Art-Deco structures that are of great significance to the nation’s history and the world. For this reason, tremendous efforts have recently been made to register Asmara in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Asmara Art Deco Exhibition was recently staged in the city of Cape Town, South Africa. Mr. Saleh Omar, the Eritrean Ambassador to South Africa and the Southern African region opened the exhibition featuring photo and video images.

The Eritrean Embassy in South Africa indicated that the exhibition is being staged under the theme “Asmara: City of Dreams”. EU Supporting Conservation of Asmara’s Unique Cultural and Architectural Heritage

History will be revived in Asmara, Africa’s modernist city; one of the astonishing, cutting edge architecture and art avenues cities.

The European Union will contribute supporting the conservation of Asmara’s unique cultural and architectural heritage.

In the framework of the EU programme for Local Authorities, the EU Delegation to Eritrea has signed in December 2016 a two-year’s cooperation programme with the Asmara Heritage Project (AHP), part of the Department of Public Works Development of the Central Region Administration (Zoba Maekel).
