Over 82,000 Ethiopian Migrants Reach Yemen in 2015: UNHCR

Disturbing Figures. Of the 92,446 migrants that arrived in Yemen by boat, despite the unprecedented internal conflict last year, 90 per cent of them (82,268) are from Ethiopia. Compared to the year 2011 (103,154) and 2012 (107,532) figures, the 2015 Ethiopian migrants arrival figure is relatively lower.

Latest data on sea arrivals in Yemen shows that despite the ongoing conflict some 92,446 people arrived by boat there in 2015, which is one of the highest annual totals of the past decade. A full two thirds arrived since March 2015 when the conflict began. With 95 deaths reported, 2015 is the second deadliest year recorded to date. In view of this, and the loss of 36 lives in an incident on 8 January this year, UNHCR is today reiterating its warning to people contemplating the crossing over the dangers of this journey.
