Eritrea Wins Award for Immunization Program

The Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) is a World Health Organization program with the goal to make vaccines available to all children.

Eritrea has received an award for outstanding achievement in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI).

The award was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Eritrea was nominated for the award at the conference held in the first week of September in Entebbe, Uganda, in which 22 countries from the Horn of Africa and Southern part of Africa participated.

Dr. Andebrhan Tesfatsion, Director General of Public Health at the Eritrean Ministry of Health, underlined that vaccination programs are among the outstanding achievements Eritrea is registering. Eritrea Submitted Report on the Promotion of the Rights of the Child

The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) is an important tool for advancing children’s rights. While building on the same basic principles as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the AU Children’s Charter highlights issues of special importance in the African context.

THE Government of Eritrea submitted a consolidated report on the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC), covering the period from 2002-2013.

The 254-page Report submitted to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) describes in detail the measures undertaken by Eritrea to safe-guard and promote the rights recognized in the ACRWC and the achievements and challenges encountered in the implementation of the Charter. ERITREA‘s experience in implementation of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been presented to representatives of national and international organizations side by side with the 69th UN General Assembly session.

In a meeting conducted yesterday at UN headquarters in New York in which Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and Ms. Yoka Brandit, Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, took part, Mr. Girma Asmerom, Eritrea’s Permanent Ambassador to the UN, and Ms. Christine Umotini, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator to Eritrea, made statements as special invited guests. EU Calls for the Implementation of Doha and Asmara Agreements

Eritrea brokered the East Sudan Peace Agreement (ESPA) in October 2006 between the government of Sudan and the Eastern Front (EF), in a relatively short period, that effectively brought to an end ten years of hostilities in Eastern Sudan. However, the skillful and smooth way at which the agreement was reached does not imply any ease in the implementation process.

AMBASSADOR Tomas Ulincy, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Sudan (EU) and Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Representative in Sudan launched yesterday at Corinthia Hotel two newly EU funded projects to strengthen access to quality primary education in the states of Gedarif, Red Sea, Kassala, Blue Nile, South Kordofan and the Darfur States.
