NO REASON. The U.S. State Department has banned the export of munitions, technologies and other goods to the Eritrean navy by US government agencies and departments, for the next two years.

The United States has banned the export of munitions, technologies and other goods to the Eritrean navy by US government agencies and departments, according to a new State Department directive.

The US restrictions aren’t meant to target Eritrea per se but to discourage Eritrean dealings with US rivals Iran, North Korea and Syria.

An order published last week in the US Federal Register by Department of State designates “Eritrean Navy (Eritrea) and any successor, sub-unit, or subsidiary thereof” under the Iran, North Korea, and Syria Nonproliferation Act. Continue reading Why Has the US Sanctioned Eritrean Navy?

Ghana Caught up in South Sudan’s UN Arms Scandal

Ever since the Government of South Sudan seized UN weapons shipment loaded with RPGs and riffles on 12 trucks labeled as ‘Construction materials’, the relation between the world body and the government deteriorated sharply. Today the government asked the highly embarrassed UN not to look for excuses and rush to impose sanctions without verifying government’s alleged wrong doings in the conflict by an independent monitors.

A GHANIAN delegation is meeting South Sudanese authorities to discuss the seizure of its weapons earlier this year. The mix-up has left Ghanaian UN peace-keepers defenseless, Ghana’s Defense Minister told DW.

The boxes were labeled as carrying construction material, yet they contained arms. While Ghana claims that they were headed for Ghanaian forces supporting the UN peacekeeping mission, South Sudan suspected the UN of arming the rebels.
