World leaders gathered in the Istanbul for the first UN World Humanitarian Summit, 23 – 24 May 2016, to stand up for common humanity and take action to prevent and reduce human suffering.

The Special Envoy of the President and Permanent Representative of Eritrea to the UN, Ambassador Girma Asmerom participated at the World Humanitarian Summit conducted from 23 to 24 May in Istanbul, Turkey.

In a speech he delivered, the Ambassador said that the current global humanitarian crisis cannot be properly understood and effectively addressed in isolation from the violent conflicts, recurring and unjustified armed interventions, widening global socio-economic inequality, and the failure of nation building on the basis of the dignity, equality and fundamental rights of citizens. HUMANISTANBUL: World Humanitarian Summit

The current international humanitarian system can no longer adequately address today’s humanitarian crises. At this critical juncture, Turkey will host the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit on 23-24 May 2016 in Istanbul.

Despite worldwide shock and indignation, it looks like little Aylan Kurdi’s tragic death last summer changed little. This is a sad – but brutal – comment on our collective humanity, if such a thing still exists.

The power of images and social media, so effective for celebrity purposes, seems to have fallen flat on its face in mobilising assistance to those less fortunate. Indeed, since Aylan’s death six months ago, countless more innocents – men, women and children – have died completely preventable deaths.
