Eritrean superstar Daniel Teklehaymanot today claimed a shining Gold and a 2011 African Individual Time Trial title after winning today’s daunting 36Km competition of the African Cycling Championship.
Janse Van Rensburg and Meint Jes Louis, both from South Africa, finished the race second and third respectively.
Despite his frustration on losing the team time trial title on Wednesday, Janse Van Rensburg had vowed to win all the remaining Gold medals in the upcoming two competitions. However, today he was conveniently beaten by his bitter rival Daniel Teklahaymanot of Eritrea.
Eritrea was represented in today’s ITT race by Daniel Teklehaymanot and Frekalsi Debesay only.
In the Women’s race, South African rider Cherise Taylor and her compatriot Ashleigh Moolman Pasio won Gold and Silver after clocking the 18Km out-and-back course with a time of 24:38 and 24:58 respectively.
This first and second place win gives South Africa 13 points in the International Cycling Union’s nation rankings, which are used to determine number of start places at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
