The recent lobbying of the State Department by the former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Herman Cohen, for it to normalise its relations with Eritrea, has paid off.

The US embassy in Asmara will soon reopen its doors.

Its chargé d’affaires, Louis Mazel, recently posted a number of short and unusually positive messages about Eritrea on the embassy’s Facebook page, in particular about Eritrean cyclists participating in the Tour de France cycle race.

This development is in line with the reconciliation of Eritrea with the States that are members of the Gulf Cooperation Council and its return to favour with the European Union.
